After LGBTQ Topic Controversy, Library To Test New System

Orange City, Iowa — After receiving a petition at their February meeting requesting the separation and labeling of LGBTQ materials, the Orange City Public Library Board of Trustees has decided to test a new system.

Board Secretary Aaron Haverdink is quick to point out that the issue is not totally resolved.

He says, for now, they’re just going to try the program.

He says some of the library staff members are supportive of the idea.

Haverdink says the library board also made a decision on a book that had been challenged.

He says about ten to fifteen people attended the meeting in addition to the board and staff members. One person spoke in regard to the book in question, and one person spoke about the collection policy.

Haverdink says they also discussed the possibilities of book selection by committee or book selection by a pool of staff members. He says the policy committee is giving the board suggestions as they go forward.
