Akron, Iowa — An Akron woman was arrested early Friday afternoon, and charged with 2nd Degree Murder following the investigation into a shooting death that happened in the early morning hours of Friday near Akron.

Plymouth County authorities say they were called to a rural Akron address shortly after midnight for the report of a shooting. According to Plymouth County Sheriff Mike Van Otterloo, when deputies arrived on the scene they discovered a white male in his 40’s suffering a gunshot wound.

Van Otterloo says the Akron Ambulance crew transported the victim to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. Van Otterloo says an autopsy on the victim’s body will be conducted by the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Ankeny.

Van Otterloo says the investigation concluded that the death was a homicide. The Sheriff says law enforcement has been summoned to the residence in the past for incidents of domestic abuse and disturbances.

According to Van Otterloo, 33-year old Becky J. Hebert of Akron, was arrested and charged with 2nd Degree murder, a Class “B” Felony.  She is accused of willfully and deliberately causing the victim’s death.

The Sheriff says the investigation revealed that Ms. Hebert and the deceased had been arguing prior to the shooting. There was reportedly a witness in the home at the time, but no other persons were injured.

Van Otterloo says the name of the victim will be released at a later time.

The investigation is continuing with officers from the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Le Mars and Akron Police Departments.
