April 2020 Both Warm & Cold, Snowier Than Normal

Sheldon, Iowa — The month of April saw some balmy high temperatures, as well as some sub-freezing low temps, but all-in-all was a fairly normal month, weather-wise.

According to records kept for the National Weather Service by KIWA Radio, The warmest temperature in April of this year was 81-degrees, which was recorded on April 23rd. This is actually 1-degree cooler than April, 2019’s warmest temperature of 82, which was recorded on April 21st of 2019. This year’s temperature of 81 is, however, 25-degrees warmer than the AVERAGE high, 53-degrees warmer than the coolest high temperature of the month, 28-degrees, which was recorded on April 4th.

We had two days in April this year tie for the coldest temperature. A low of 10-degrees was recorded on both April 13th and April 14th. The AVERAGE low temperature for April, 2020 was 29-degrees, some 6-degrees colder than the average low for April, 2019, which was recorded on April 3rd of last year.

In the category of precipitation, a total of 1.47-inches of moisture was recorded during the month, which is 0.8″ below the precipitation received in a normal April. We received a total of 5.5-inches of snow during the month of April, with one inch being recorded on April 13th, and another 4.5-inches recorded the very next day. Normal April snowfall would be 1.9-inches, so April of this year saw 3.6-inches more snow than normal fall on Sheldon.
