Bill In Iowa Senate Would Override City Ordinances On Fireworks

Sheldon, Iowa — An Iowa Senate subcommittee late last week advanced a bill that would remove some local government control over the sales and use of fireworks in the state.

Sheldon City Manager Sam Kooiker says the bill, if it were to become law, would remove any local restrictions on the sale of fireworks.

Kooiker says the Iowa League of Cities is opposed to the bill because it interferes with local control.

In addition to removing local restrictions on the sale of fireworks, he says the bill would also preclude Iowa cities from placing restrictions on the hours that fireworks may be shot off on July 4th.

Cities and counties, as well as fire fighters and law enforcement groups oppose the bill, which moved to the Senate Commerce Committee earlier this week.
