Board of Adjustment To Hear Request To Open Bottle-Can Redemption Center

Sheldon, Iowa — Sheldon could be coming one step closer to having a bottle and can redemption facility in town once again.

The Sheldon Zoning Board of Adjustment is scheduled to meet Thursday afternoon (October 17th) to hear a request from a local woman that would allow her to open a can and bottle redemption center at 1313 2nd Avenue, the former Innovative Machine location on Business 60 South. The property is zoned Arterial Commercial, and a redemption center is not one of the permitted uses for properties in an Arterial Commercial zoning district. According to the paperwork filed with the Board of Adjustment, a special exception is being requested which would allow a redemption center to be located in that facility.

The lady desiring to locate a bottle and can redemption center at that location has reportedly made a purchase offer on the property, contingent on a special exception being granted by the Board of Adjustment.

Sheldon’s only redemption center, Corner Can Redemption, which was located at the corner of 8th Street and 3rd Avenue downtown, closed as of August 1st of this year. In late August a hearing before the Zoning Board of Adjustment was requested to gain a special exception to zoning for a building located on 9th Street in downtown Sheldon. Before the Board of Adjustment could meet to hear the request, it was withdrawn by the individual who had requested the hearing.

Thursday’s meeting will allow the Zoning Board of Adjustment to hear the request for 1313 2nd Avenue. That hearing was requested by the same individual who had initially planned to open a redemption center in that 9th Street location.

If the Zoning Board of Adjustment opts to allow the special exception, the individual requesting it plans to complete the redemption center, and have it open within the next year, according to paperwork filed with the City.

Thursday’s meeting of the Sheldon Zoning Board of Adjustment will be held at 4:00 Thursday afternoon in Council Chambers of the Sheldon Community Services Center.
