Sheldon, Iowa — As part of KIWA’s 55th Anniversary celebration, we offered our listeners a chance to win various prizes through two different games, Song of the Day, and Hi-Lo.
We had our first big winner in the Hi-Lo game on August 18th, and the final Hi-Lo game was completed Thursday, October 27th, The final, Grand Prize winner of a Henry lever-action .17-caliber rifle was Fred Jungers of Sheldon, who correctly guessed the Hi-Lo number, which was 8338. Fred stopped by the KIWA Studios Friday morning to collect the gift certificate that he’ll be able to trade for his gun. He told us that, while trying to keep track of the numbers that had been guessed previously, he wasn’t at all sure that he had the correct guess when he called Thursday.
Jungers said he called in from the combine to make his guess, and couldn’t believe he had actually won.
He says he normally doesn’t win things. He says the last time he won anything was several years ago.
In addition to our Hi-Lo Grand Prize winner, Fred Jungers, our other Hi-Lo game winners were:
- Alice Stapenhorst of Sheldon, who won the first round of the game back on August 18th. Her guess of #714 won her a $155 cash prize
- Robin Jungers of Boyden, whose guess of #1109 garnered her a $155 prize on August 26th
- Myron Klein of Sheldon. His guess of #446 earned him a $155 payday on September 1st
- Mike Oldenkamp of Sheldon, who pocketed $155 for his guess of #506 on September 16th
- Candy Blocker of Sheldon. Candy earned $155 for her correct guess of #847, back on October 5th
- Laura Burns of Sibley, who claimed a $555 Gift Certificate from Northwest Decor and Furniture in Sheldon, for her correct guess of #987.
Our other major 55th Anniversary game was a Song-Of-The-Day game. In that contest, people listened to KIWA-FM for the day’s Song of the Day, and called in to be entered into a drawing.
The Song of the Day winners were:
- Mary Huls of Boyden, who won a Holland Companion Grill by being the lucky caller on September 9th
- Rod Hiedstra of Sibley took home a pair of tickets to the Vikings/Giants NFL game in Minneapolis. Rod’s win was on September 23rd
- Melissa Laubach of Sheldon claimed a 2-night stay at Village West Resort at Okoboji for her win on October 14th.
KIWA wants to congratulate all the winners, and thank everyone who played our 55th Anniversary games.
KIWA went on the air in October, 1961 as an AM radio station at 1550 on the dial. The first studios were located upstairs in the old Pucci’s building. The station was put on the air by Red Stangland of Sioux Falls, and the Stangland family still owns KIWA to this day.
Since 1961 KIWA has had three different General Managers: Wally Stangland, Frank Luepke, and now Walt Pruiksma.
We at KIWA would like to thank our listeners and advertisers for your support over the years, and your very important role in helping us achieve 55 successful years in business.
