Northwest Iowa — This Thanksgiving, law enforcement agencies around the area will ramp up patrols and be on the lookout for seat belt violations.
The theme for this STEP, or Special Traffic Enforcement Program, is “Buckling Up Could Save Your Giblets”, Iowa State Patrol Trooper Vince Kurtz says that’s appropriate.
Kurtz says the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend is one of the most deadly of the year.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that, during the 2014 Thanksgiving weekend period, 341 People lost their lives, nationwide, and fifty-percent of those people weren’t wearing their seat belts. In Iowa, five people were killed during the Thanksgiving weekend last year, and Kurtz says that’s five too many.
Kurtz says this time of year the weather can also play a major role in traffic crashes.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, wearing your seat belt is the single most effective way to save your life and the lives of your loved ones in the event of a crash.Failing to buckle up in dangerous, and against the law. Remember, this Thanksgiving weekend, and all year long, “Click It or Ticket!”
