Contractors On Pace At New Sioux Center High School Site

Sioux Center, Iowa — Work continues on a $39.6 million new high school in Sioux Center. Ground was broken in August of 2019 on what will become the new high school for the Sioux Center Community School District.

Superintendent of the district, Gary McEldowney gives us a construction update.

(as said:) “It’s coming along really really well. Obviously, we’ve had great weather for the construction process for the most part. We get I would guess that we’re probably somewhere between 65 and 70 percent complete. Our construction managers come to our board meeting every month and give a percentage update and at our board meeting a few weeks ago we were at 63 percent. So I would say we’re probably somewhere between 65 and 70. We’ll hear that officially here on the 16th of November. All in all, things are on schedule. We’re really excited about that and we are expecting and looking forward to taking ownership, Ah that will be somewhere on June 22nd is the plan at this particular point. “

He says the building is enclosed, and work continues on the inside.

(as said:) “Got all the temporary heat in place and we definitely didn’t need it this week. But last week was a little different situation and so they’re in a very good place with that. Painting the second level. The sheetrocking is pretty much completed and I understand that we’ll be getting some of the cabinetry and different things coming in very shortly. So doing some measurement and different things for the gym floor that was one of the things we talked about obviously, that’s something that won’t be put in till near the end, but workers are doing an outstanding job and working really well together on things.”

Mr. McEldowney says there have been some change orders, but nothing out of the ordinary. He says they’re on budget, or maybe a little under at this point. He says the summer of 2021 will be a busy summer, since every grade level will be moving. Those in charge are calling it a four-school solution. Two fewer grade levels will be in Kinsey Elementary. Third through fifth grades will move into the current middle school. The middle schoolers will move to the current high school, and the high schoolers will move into the new building.
