Council Hears First Reading Of Ordinance To Increase Water & Sewer Rates

Sheldon, Iowa — When the Sheldon City Council met Wednesday they heard the first reading of an ordinance that would change the water and sewer water 1rates for Sheldon customers.   City Manager Scott Wynja told the Council that adoption of this ordinance would increase water rates by two percent and sewer rates by four percent….an average of three percent for all users  The Council voted to move the proposal to a second reading to give people an opportunity to comment or ask questions at the next council meeting. .

The Council also heard a report from the SCDC Director Curt  Strouth.  He said that the biggest concern they are hearing from businesses is the lack of skilled employees and the lack of affordable housing.  He said this is a common concern in the area as well as neighboring states.  He mentioned the Home-Based Iowa program which is designed to give communities an opportunity to get in touch with returning veterans who are looking for employment.   He also said the SCDC Board has made housing a high priority and presented copies of a brochure that is being used to promote the housing development at Sheldon Crossing.
Recreation director Jake Kerr also reported to the Council at Wednesday’s meeting.  He discussed the upcoming Summer Rec activities.  He is organizing a new 4 on 4 Women’s Indoor Volleyball League which will start on June 8th.  Registration for this program must be sent or delivered to the Sheldon City Office by May 27th.  He also talked about the First Annual Sheldon Recreation Summer Soccer Classic which will be held July 25th and 26th. The registration deadline for this new event is July 9th.
The public hearing on the budget amendment which was scheduled for this Wednesday was postponed because of an error in the published notice.  The new hearing date has been set for the next council meeting which will be held at twelve noon on June 3rd.
