Council Makes No Decision On 2nd Full-Time Event Center Employee

Sheldon, Iowa — Whether or not Sheldon’s Crossroads Pavilion should hire a second full time employee was on the agenda at the city council meeting Wednesday, but once again no decision was made.

Council member Greg Geels voiced concern about the vision of what the event center should be, and asked, “are we all on the same page?” Mayor Katricia Meendering expressed the opinion that the council and the Pavilion board should meet together to openly exchange their thoughts. Councilman Tom Eggers stressed that should be done now, an opinion that was echoed by Councilman Brad Hindt. Councilman Pete Hamil voiced the opinion that the Pavilion is designed to be more than just a wedding venue, which follows the thought that a second full-time person could help develop more activities at the venue during the week. It was decided that a meeting to fully discuss the situation would be held Wednesday morning April 11th at 7 a.m.

When the council met Wednesday, they heard no comments from the public during a public hearing on the sale of a lot in the Sunshine Addition. The council voted to approve the sale with the understanding that the content of this hearing resolved deficiencies in the original sale procedures that were in place when Jeffrey and Sara Van Meeteren purchased the property in 2015.

The council also held another public hearing that dealt with the authorization of a loan agreement on the sewer revenue capital loan notes. The council voted to authorize the agreement. They also approved the contract with Vander Pol Excavating for the Floyd Industrial Park project and the contract with Hoogendoorn Construction for the water treatment facilities project.

The council also expressed their appreciation for the good work Walt Pruiksma has done as EMA Director. Pruiksma has resigned the position with Kent Lohrenz named as the new EMA Director.
