Council Makes Short Work Of Most Of Their Agenda At Wednesday Meeting

Sheldon, Iowa — At Wednesday’s meeting of the Sheldon City Council, the council disposed of the main portion of their agenda in short order, staying in open session for only about 30 minutes.

During that half hour, the council approved one resolution authorizing the advancement of costs for the mitigation of a nuisance on the property located at 229 North 5th Avenue. They passed another awarding the fuel system contract for the Sheldon Regional Airport. There was a third resolution passed approving the City’s 2020-21 Urban Renewal Report, a fourth approving the 21-22 Budget Amendment, as well as a fifth resolution adopting a formal Affiliation Agreement between the Sheldon Community Ambulance Team and the Boyden Ambulance. That agreement is required, based upon the number of calls the Boyden Ambulance answers each year.

In other action, the Council set their December 15th meeting as the date and time for a public hearing on agreements to facilitate the demolition of the former Bethel Reformed Church building, which is located on the northeast corner of the 7th Street and 6th Avenue intersection. The church building was heavily damaged in a fire in September of 2016, and has been unusable since that time. The agreements address the demolition of the church building, along with a transition to housing on the property.

The Council was also presented with the Capital Improvement Plan Updates for the City’s Emergency Services Departments. No action was taken, but City Manager Sam Kooiker presented them to the Council at this meeting in order to give members a chance to review and absorb the information prior to the Council’s Budget Workshops.

After the thirty-minute open session, the Council adjourned into closed session to discuss the potential purchase of real estate, after which they returned to open session and advised that there was no action to be taken on the matter at this time.
