Council To Discuss New Proposal For Bethel Property At Wednesday Meeting

Sheldon, Iowa — When the Sheldon City Council meets in regular session Wednesday afternoon, they’ll take a look at a new plan for the development of the site that formerly housed the Bethel Reformed Church building. That structure was heavily damaged by fire back in September of 2016. The building was razed earlier this year.

A plan had been established and approved earlier, but the rising costs of materials, as well as supply chain challenges, caused that developer to back out of the deal. Now, another developer has approached the City with a new proposal that the Council will take up at this week’s meeting. They’re scheduled to review the new developer’s site plan, and discuss a change to the minimum assessment agreement on the property. This will be the first step in the process of bringing to life the plan to add much-needed new housing in that area, which is located on the north side of 7th Street, between 6th and 7th Avenues.

The Council is also expected to approve a resolution adopting the Emergency Operations Plan, and authorize Shelter Locations during their Wednesday meeting.

In other action, the Council will look at renewing the agreement with Clay County South Dakota, to sell them a portion of Sheldon’s annual allotment of water from the Lewis & Clark Regional Water System for an additional five year period.

Wednesday’s regular meeting of the Sheldon City Council is scheduled to begin at 4:30 in Council Chambers, on the upper level of the Sheldon Community Services Center. The meeting is open to the public, but if you can’t attend, you can watch online via YouTube Live.
