Country School Conference Coming To Sheldon

Sheldon, Iowa — People from all over who are interested in the history of country schools will be coming to Sheldon next weekend.

The 18th Annual Country School Preservation Conference will be held October 6-7, 2017 at Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon. Colleen Lemkuil, who is one of the people in charge says that the two-day conference offers an array of country school topics. She tells us about Friday, October 6th.

She says it’s a full day program including 10 presenters, a panel of authors and researchers on country schooling, and tours of the Prairie Arts Historical Park and Sheldon Prairie Museum. Lemkuil says representatives from a museum at the University of Northern Iowa, the Country School Association of America, Preservation Iowa, and many more will be there. She says even if you’re not going to the conference, they’d like to see you on October 6th as well.

She tells us about day two.

She says the art club will also start for the year on October 7th.

Early registration for the conference is appreciated. The deadline is October 1, 2017. For a full conference brochure click here.

She says there are a number of other activities going on at the Prarie Arts Historical Park. The first one is a 4-H reunion for former 4-H’ers whose clubs used to meet at the Baker Township Center School when it was out in the country. That’s the very next day, Sunday, October 8th.

Also planned is a ribbon cutting for the Baker school, which they plan to offer for meetings or small gatherings, such as family holiday groups. The ribbon cutting will be on Friday, October 13th. And the annual Halloween party at the Prarie Arts Historical Park will be on Saturday, October 28th.

Lemkuil says they remain in need of your help.
