Crashes Involving Farm Implements Prompts Safety Reminder From Trooper Kurtz

Northwest Iowa — Recent farm-implement involved traffic crashes in the area, including two that happened within about 24-hours, and in nearly the same location, have prompted Iowa State Patrol Trooper Vince Kurtz to weigh-in yet again with advice on how to help avoid these types of crashes.

Kurtz says the best practice for motorists is to simply drive defensively, and expect slow-moving implements to be on the road ahead.

He also says there are things a farmer can do to help avoid a collision.

Kurtz says making yourself more visible is the name of the game.

He says one of the reasons for farmers to go beyond the minimum markings required is the fact that the liability from a crash could put your entire farming operation in financial peril.

With the corn crop being only about 50% harvested statewide thus far, the harvest season will be continuing for a little while longer, and motorists, as well as operators of farm equipment need to do their part to avoid these collisions.
