Farmers Harvesting A Good Crop

Northwest Iowa — Farmers are in the midst of harvest in northwest Iowa, and they’re making some progress.

But, according to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Agronomist and Field Specialist Joel De Jong, it’s been a little more difficult to get soybeans harvested, because farmers have been waiting for ideal combining conditions that would require little to no artificial drying of the beans.

De Jong says it’s easier for soybeans to dry in the field, but if there’s fog or dew, the moisture can go right back up. Corn, on the other hand dries much more slowly in the field because of the husk around the ear, and often requires drying after it’s been harvested.

He says the corn harvest is getting closer to completion every day.

De Jong says while it varies somewhat, soybean yields in northwest Iowa have been good this year.

He says the corn yields have been up there as well.
