Hull Girl Wins Sheriff’s Office Essay Contest

Hull, Iowa — A Hull girl’s essay has been selected as the winning essay in a contest sponsored by the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office.

The contest is the second annual essay contest for area 6th grade students, according to Sioux County School Resource Officer, or “SRO” Deputy Waylon Pollema.

He says the contest is open to sixth-grade students in all schools in which he serves as an SRO, which include Hull Christian School, Boyden-Hull Elementary, Spalding Catholic and Netherlands Reformed Christian School.

He says this year, the topic was “Courage.”

The submitted essays were reviewed by Sheriff Dan Altena, SRO Deputy Pollema and Mrs. Julie Visschers’ Honors English class from the Boyden‐Hull JR/SR High School in Hull.

Katie Van Den Top, a student at Boyden‐Hull Elementary, was selected as the winner of this year’s essay contest. She is the daughter of Brent and Amy Van Den Top of Hull.

He tells us about her essay.

Pollema says Van Den Top and her parents were honored by having her essay posted on the Sheriff’s Office website and Facebook page. They received a tour of the Sheriff’s Office and the courthouse and she had the opportunity to do a ride‐along with Pollema in his patrol vehicle.

Pollema said that there were many well‐written essays again this year, which made the decision difficult. He says he wants to thank everyone who participated.
