It’s Back To School Time; Deputy Urges Caution, Elimination Of Distractions

Northwest Iowa — Students are going back to school and that means all drivers need to be extra cautious on the roads and streets to prevent tragedy.

We talked to Sioux County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer Waylon Pollema.

He says some older kids might be trying out their school permits for the first time.

Pollema says people also need to look out for school busses picking up and dropping off students.

The flashing red lights and stop sign on a school bus mean the same thing as if you were to encounter them anywhere else. STOP. It doesn’t make a difference if you’re behind the school bus or are meeting the school bus. All traffic must come to a stop while students are being picked up or dropped off. Pollema says that’s just another reason to eliminate distracted driving — so you don’t miss the stop signs and flashing lights and cause a tragedy.
