Sheldon, Iowa — There’s a new voice that you may have heard, or will soon hear, on KIWA local newscasts. Luke Jansma has begun work as an intern in the KIWA News Department.
Jansma, who is a 2018 graduate of Sheldon High School, comes to us after graduating this spring from Western Iowa Tech in Sioux City.
(As above) “I went to school at Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City. I took their brand new broadcasting journalism program. I always had a affinity for that, I guess you would say, and so I decided oh yeah that would be you know probably a good fit for me and here I am.”
One of the requirements for his Broadcast Journalism degree is the successful completion of an internship with a commercial station.
(As above) “You can get that at any point and a lot of people actually do do their internships like the summers after they graduate. I figured, you know, that would be a good thing for me especially after COVID hit it was really difficult for me up there in Sioux City, to find anything.”
On his first day at KIWA, Jansma hit the ground running, going with another staff member to conduct an interview, writing stories to be used on the air and posted to our various websites, as well as lending his voice to those stories on the air. He says the whole experience is very exciting.
(As above) “This is all just super duper exciting for me because you know it is the first time actually out in the field I’m you know I’m I’m I’m the I’m you know I’m excited I’m confident because I’ve you know I’ve I’ve done all you know in the classroom setting and now I’m ready to apply it out in the real world and it’s just really really really exciting stuff.”
Jansma began his internship at KIWA on Tuesday, June 2nd.
