June Is Dairy Month

Northwest Iowa — June is Dairy Month in the United States.

We talked with Fred Hall, who is the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach dairy specialist for northwest Iowa.

He tells us about the history of Dairy Month.

He tells us what has happened since then to get people acquainted with dairy operations.

Hall says the Western Iowa Dairy Alliance and the Midwest Dairy Association are doing a Dairy Farm Tour at Summit Dairy near Primghar on June 28th.

He says that the funds for these events come from dairy producers.

He says dairy farmers want consumers to know that they have their best interests at heart.

Hall says northwest Iowa is a great place for dairy production. For one thing, he says there are some processing plants in the area. Some of the bigger ones include Wells and Dean Foods in Le Mars, and Agropur Cheese in Hull, as well as AMPI. He also says that smaller, farm-to-table operations are gaining a foothold in the area as well, such as Stensland Dairy near Larchwood, which is a smaller family dairy operation.

Again if you’d like to learn more about dairy production in northwest Iowa, Hall invites you to the Dairy Farm Tour at Summit Dairy near Primghar on June 28th. You can also find out more at wiadairy.com.
