UPDATE: Three Judge Finalists Will Interview August 10th

Spencer, Iowa — A Spencer man is among three attorneys who are vying for a judge position. He and the other candidates will interview for that position a week from Friday — Friday, August 10th.

The attorneys are Travis S. Johnson of Spencer, Kristal L. Phillips of Holstein, and Andrew J. Smith of Pomeroy. Johnson will interview first at 9:30 a.m., Phillips will interview at 10:00 a.m., with Smith interviewing at 10:30 a.m., followed by discussion and voting by the current District Court Judges of the 3A Judicial District.

Court officials tell us all interviews will be conducted by the 3A District Court Judges in the District Courtroom of the Clay County Courthouse and will be no more than 25 minutes in length. The interviews are open to the public. Discussion and voting by the 3A District Court Judges, however, will be closed to the public.

They say individual interviews between a nominee and any of the 3A District Court Judges prior to the interviews scheduled above are permitted at the discretion of each judge but are not required.

We are told that each nominee will be given up to 5 minutes for an opening statement, followed by up to 20 minutes of questioning by the Judges. Each nominee will be contacted and advised of the nominee selected by the 3A District Court Judges to fill the district associate judge vacancy.

Spencer, Iowa — Three northwest Iowa attorneys have been nominated to be considered to become a district judge in our area.

Following a joint meeting on Friday of the Buena Vista, Cherokee, Clay, and O’Brien County Magistrate Nominating Commissions, three people were nominated for consideration by the District Court Judges of the 3A Judicial District to fill the vacancy created by the appointment of Judge Charles Borth to the district court bench. They are Attorney Kristal L. Phillips of Holstein, Attorney Travis S. Johnson of Spencer, and Attorney Andrew J. Smith of Pomeroy.

Judicial Sub-District 3A consists of Buena Vista, Cherokee, Clay, Dickinson, Emmet, Kossuth, Lyon, O’Brien, Osceola and Palo Alto Counties. Interviews of the three nominees will be held on August 10, 2018, by the 3A District Court Judges.

Spencer, Iowa — A joint meeting of the Buena Vista, Clay, Cherokee and O’Brien County Magistrate Nominating Commissions will be held in the District Courtroom of the Clay County Courthouse, 215 West 4th Street, Spencer, on Friday, July 27th, at 9 A.M.

Court officials say an organizational meeting of the Commissions will be held at 9:00 that morning, with applicant interviews beginning at 10:00.  The interviews are to select three nominees from the ten people who have applied for the position, to later be considered by the District Court Judges of Judicial Election District 3A to fill the vacancy resulting from the appointment of Judge Charles K. Borth to the District Court Bench on June 8th. 

Court officials say the meeting is open to the public.
