Orab 5th Graders Hear From Troops Who Received Student’s Cards

Sheldon, Iowa — This past December, a pair of Sheldon Middle School students decided they wanted to send cards to troops deployed overseas.

Kam Kleinhesselink and Andyn Bucher came up with the idea, each for a different reason. Kleinhesselink says his motivation was his brother, who is currently deployed as a medic.

(As above) “We decided to make the cards for the soldiers because I was interested because my brother, Travis, is currently serving in Africa.”

Bucher’s motivation came in the form of a couple of his military relatives.

(As above) “I was interested because I have two uncles that were deployed into the Army.”

The pair  have now heard back from the troops who received the cards they and their classmates sent. Kleinhesselink tells us more.

(As above) “We received pictures of the soldiers opening and reading the cards. We enjoyed seeing what cards they were reading, and they looked happy to have received them.”

Both boys considered this a very positive experience, and Bucher says they’d like to do something similar in the future.

(As above) “We would like to do something similar next year. Possibly to a different troop.”

The young men came up with the idea in late November. On December 9th they showed a presentation to their 5th grade class and began writing their cards to the troops in Africa the same day, thanking the troops for their service.
