Police Chief: Scammers Busy Lately

Sheldon, Iowa — Scammers have been hard at work in recent weeks, attempting to part area folks from their hard-earned money through a variety of scams.

Sheldon Police Chief Lyle Bolkema says one of the most frequent is the IRS scam.

Bolkema reminds that the IRS contacts people who owe taxes by mail before any telephone calls are made.

He says the most recent scam for which they have received complaints is the Lottery Scam.

Chief Bolkema says that, while the people making the latest scam complaints haven’t fallen for the scams, sadly someone in Sheldon fell prey not too long ago.

Bolkema says you should always be suspicious if you receive a phone call and the caller wants you to send money “right away”. The Chief says that, in itself, should raise a red flag. And, he says, you should always take time to verify that a money request is legitimate before parting with your hard-earned cash.
