Principals Report on Efforts of Gratitude and Kindness

Sheldon, Iowa – The Sheldon Community Schools Board met in regular session on Wednesday, December 12th at 5:00 pm in the High School library.

Industrial Technology teacher Brice Montgomery and student Jarron Clark presented to the board on their use of various programs they have been utilizing for 3D printing projects and virtual tour models.

There were two employee resignations and two contracts presented for consideration, all of which were approved by the board.

Each of the three schools have been focusing on themes of kindness and giving, both locally and globally. At East Elementary, students and volunteers came together hoping to package 20,000 meals for “Then Feed Just One.” The response was overwhelming, with 32,184 total meals packaged to be sent to Honduras, one of the poorest countries in the world. They are also in the process of holding a nonperishable food drive through the 21st of this month, with items going to the local food bank in Primghar.

At the Middle School, committee members from the 5/6th and the 7/8th student council used funds from their annual magazine sale to locally purchase and wrap gifts for a family that the school adopted through Upper Des Moines Opportunity.

Students at the High School are donating money from various clubs to help support approximately 18 local families who could use a little extra support this time of year. They are also in the process of holding a food drive with items collected going to Love, INC and Upper Des Moines Opportunity.

In other business, the Sheldon soccer program was approved, as was the sharing program with Sibley-Ocheyedan, pending that school board’s approval during their meeting on Monday, December 17th. The 2019 – 2020 school calendar had no changes made to it, but will be open for comment from the public during the January school board meeting before it receives final approval.

The 1-to-1 Technology Handbook was approved, letters have been sent out to parents, and a role out date of January 2nd, 2019 has been set for the implementation of the program. Student/parent meetings have also been scheduled to review the handbook with students expected to receive the Chromebooks on January 3rd, 2019.

The next regular meeting of the Sheldon Community Schools Board has been set for Wednesday, January 9th at 5:00 pm in the High School Library.
