Recent Heat Wave Mild Compared To Years Past

Sheldon, Iowa — July has started out to be a warm one this year in northwest Iowa, but not nearly as warm as some years.

KIWA Radio’s official weather statistics show that temperatures since July 1st have topped out in the 80’s to 90-degrees, with Thursday’s high of 90 being the warmest temperature of the week in Sheldon.

Looking back at through the records, we see that there have been many days when we saw significantly hotter temperatures than we’ve experienced so far this month.  For example, the first week of July has seen temperatures surpass the 100-degree mark 6 times since record-keeping began.

July of 1911 was a particularly warm one, with high temperatures reaching 102 on July 1st,and 2nd of that year.  July 3, 1911 saw the mercury top out at 100-degrees.

July, 1936 also saw some hot temperatures, with high temperatures reaching 110-degrees on July 4th that year, before cooling to 108-degrees on July 5th, and 102 on July 6th of that year.

So while it seemed awfully hot a few days this week, we need to remember that it could be, and has been, a whole lot hotter here in northwest Iowa.
