Rural Sanborn Shop Building, Contents Destroyed In Fire

Sanborn, Iowa– A garage-type shop building was destroyed in a fire on Monday, December 18, 2017 near Sanborn.

According to Sanborn Fire Chief Randy Lyman, about 1:25 p.m., the Sanborn Fire Department was called to the report of a building on fire at 6130 300th Street. That’s about two miles north and four east of Sanborn.

The chief says the fire department saw the tin-covered building on fire as they approached the scene. He says the fiberglass garage door had melted.

Lyman says no injuries were reported, and they were able to extinguish the fire with water and foam.

He says Sanborn firefighters were assisted by the Melvin Fire Department.

He says the cause of the fire is not officially determined, but it appeared to have been caused by a malfunctioning furnace.

Chief Lyman reports that the owner and an employee were able to get much of the contents out of the building before they were destroyed. He says they were able to save a welder, a cutting torch, and some tools, but other tools were destroyed in the fire. He says the building and its remaining contents were totaled.

Lyman says firefighters were on scene until 3:30 p.m.
