Sanborn Firefighters Called To Ditch Fire

Sanborn, Iowa — Sanborn firefighters were called out on Wednesday afternoon to a corn stalk fire northeast of town.

Sanborn Fire Chief Randy Lyman says the fire was near the intersection of 290th Street and Starling Avenue, about three miles east of Sanborn and three north. He reports that about 1:20 p.m. a farmer had been burning some corn stalks, and that fire blew into the ditch. He says the ditch fire started burning an electric pole owned by Northwest Rural Electric Cooperative.

Lyman says when firefighters arrived, the pole fire was nearly out but the farmer wanted the fire department to put out the ditch and cornstalks so he wouldn’t have to worry about it again.

He says they ran along the ditch with a truck and sprayed about 3000 gallons of water on the fire to put it out.

The chief says Northwest REC didn’t think they’d have to replace the pole.

Lyman says fire crews were on scene for about an hour.
