UPDATE: Sanborn Trio Named Red Cross “Heroes of the Heartland”

Des Moines, Iowa — Three Sanborn residents were honored by the Iowa Chapter of the American Red Cross in a ceremony held early Thursday morning in Des Moines.

Jeff Baatz, Scott Ross, and his young son Jaxson Ross were each honored as “Heroes of the Heartland” for their response to an emergency situation that arose at Archer Coop Grain in May of last year.

According to the Red Cross, Baatz and an intern, Frannie Feekes, were working under a feed truck when Feekes’ hair became entangled in the truck’s PTO shaft, causing severe injuries. Red Cross officials say Baatz pulled Feekes from under the truck, and called for the elder Ross to bring blankets, which the two men used to apply pressure to Feekes’ head to control bleeding. The pair are also credited with keeping Feekes calm until first responders arrived at the scene.

The Red Cross said that in the days and weeks following the accident, Ross’ young son, Jaxson stayed in regular contact with Feekes to help elevate her spirits. The lad even held a lemonade stand & bake sale that netted more than $700 to help Feekes with expenses during her recovery.

The three from Sanborn were among seven Iowans named as  “Heroes of the Heartland” who were honored during Wednesday morning’s ceremony.

Sanborn, Iowa — The Iowa Red Cross “Heroes of the Heartland” list for 2018 includes three Sanborn residents.

According to the Red Cross Iowa website, those being honored are Jeff Baatz, along with Scott and Jaxson Ross.

According to the Red Cross, Baatz and an intern, Frannie Feekes, were working under a truck at Archer Co-op Grain when Feekes’ hair got caught in machinery. She lost a significant part of her scalp in the accident. The Red Cross credits Baatz for pulling Feekes out from under the truck. He then called for Scott Ross who came running with blankets. The men applied pressure to Feekes’ head and kept her calm until the ambulance arrived.

The Red Cross says that, in the weeks that followed, Scott Ross’ son, Jaxson, stayed in regular contact with Feekes to keep her spirits up. The youngster drew her pictures, and even organized a Lemonade Stand/Bake Sale that raised $700 to help Feekes during her long recovery.

The trio will be honored during an event in Des Moines at the Iowa Events Center tomorrow (Wednesday, March 28th).
