Sanford Doctor On Frigid Weather Safety

Sheldon, Iowa — The frigid weather we’re experiencing can cause serious injury, even death, if you are outside in the elements for too long. And that might not take as long as you think.

Dr. Ryan Becker from Sanford Sheldon says it doesn’t take long for your core body temperature to drop.

He says the best way to avoid hypothermia and frostbite is to avoid the cold.

Becker says you should also avoid alcohol consumption and smoking, as both are detrimental to avoiding hypothermia. Becker says it’s also important to eat sufficient calories to help your body stay warm, and drink plenty of water. He says you should dress appropriately, as well.

Dr. Becker says frostbite is another serious problem, and he offers some early signs.

He offers advice if you suspect frostbite.

In addition, Becker says you should avoid touching water or metal surfaces, since they can speed the onset of frostbite.  And again, if you suspect frostbite, seek immediate medical attention.
