Tips For Keeping Your Vehicle Running In The Frigid Weather

Northwest Iowa — The arctic cold temperatures this week can be hard on more than just your body. They can complicate things for your vehicles, as well.

Nate Engelkes is a Diesel Technology Instructor at Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon and he says the first consideration for your diesel engine is using good fuel.

Engelkes says diesel engines are all about heat, so once you get it started don’t shut it off.

He says diesel engines aren’t the only ones that can have fuel issues, gasoline engines can also fall victim to cold weather.

He says you should keep your vehicle’s fuel tank as full as possible.

Engelkes also says that ethanol blend gasoline is a higher strength fuel than regular gasoline, and normally isn’t as susceptible to freezing.

One other thing, if your vehicle’s battery is weak, he says you’ll probably find out in this weather when it fails to start your engine.
