School Board Adopts Revised 2017-18 Calendar

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon Community Schools District Board of Education approved a revised District Calendar for the 2017-18 school year when they met in regular session Monday evening.

The newly adopted calendar has one change from the previous version.  The original calendar had built-in two potential snow days.  The newly approved Revised Calendar removes those two dates, and allows for any missed days due to weather to be made up at the end of the school year.  To see the revised 2017-18 Sheldon Community School District Calendar, CLICK HERE.

In other action, the Board approved four Open Enrollment Applications for the 2017-18 school year.  Three students will be Open Enrolling out of the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Community School District into the Sheldon District.  The fourth will be Open Enrolling out of the Sheldon District into the South O’Brien Community School District.

The Board also accepted a trio of resignations during Monday’s meeting.  Barb Vanden Hull will be retiring at the end of this school year from her position as Associate at East Elementary, Hayden Adkins is resigning from his 9th Grade Wrestling Coach position, and Camille De Zeeuw is resigning from her 5th and 6th Grade Science and Social Studies teaching position.

In other action, the Board approved a series of employment contracts.  Erin Lorch was hired as a High School Language Arts Teacher, as a salary of $41,900.  Tammy Keepers will be a High School Spanish and English Learners teacher at a salary of $56,750.  Heath Anderson will be teaching High School Science at a salary of $49,050, and will sponsor the Science Club, for an additional $937.  In addition, the Board approved the hiring of Samantha Kleinwolterink as Middle School Softball Coach for $2,137, Jessica Stofferan as Assistant High School Softball Coach  for $3,749, and Leon Kleinwolterink for 9th Grade Softball Coach at $2,812.  The Board also approved salaries of $8,800 for TLC Instructional Coaches Eric Maassen, Cindy Prewitt, and Stephanie Pritts, as well as $2,900 salaries for TLC Model Teachers Kathy Arnold, Jeri Kruger, Sara Dykstra, Ann Jansen, Jim Gude, Gina Woelber, Carla Kleinwolterink, Chuck Johnson, and Jason Uhl.

The Board also celebrated School Board Recognition Week at Monday’s meeting, and enjoyed cake to honor the observance.

The Board had initially planned to set a date and time for their June meeting during their Monday night meeting, since Board President Kecia Hickman is unavailable to attend on the normal date.  After examining several other dates, the Board elected to leave the meeting date as is, June 12th at 5:00 pm in the High School Library.
