Sheldon Council To Hold Max Property Tax Levy Hearing Wednesday

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon City Council will meet in special session Wednesday afternoon (March 10th), primarily to deal with the Maximum Levy on real estate taxes for the next fiscal year.

For the current Fiscal Year, the City’s budget includes revenues of $1,604,039 from real estate taxes on Sheldon real property. City officials say the projected new number for 21-22 is $1,623,105. That figure represents an increase in property tax revenues of 1.18%. As a result, the Maximum Property Tax dollars requested for Fiscal Year 21-22 represents an increase of no more than 102% from the Maximum Property Tax dollars requested for the current fiscal year.

Following Wednesday’s public hearing, the Council is expected to adopt a resolution to adopt that new Maximum Property Tax Levy. They’ll also set a public hearing on the Fiscal Year 2021-2022 budget, as well as the adoption of that budget at their next meeting, which is scheduled for March 24th.

Also during Wednesday’s meeting, Public Works Director Todd Uhl will be provide a brief update on the City’s efforts to seek federal FAST Act funding for a reconstruction of Western Avenue. The application will be different from last year’s unsuccessful application.

In other action, Officers David Dykstra and Todd Wood will both take the Oath of Office to become Sergeants on the Sheldon Police Department during Wednesday’s meeting.

Wednesday’s special meeting of the Sheldon City Council is scheduled to begin at 4:30 pm in Council Chambers at the Sheldon Community Services Center. The meeting is open to the public, in-person, or via Zoom. To attend the meeting virtually, CLICK HERE.
