Sheldon PD Increasing Patrols In School Zones

Sheldon, Iowa — Speeders, along with drivers failing to yield to pedestrians at certain school-area crosswalks in Sheldon have prompted an increased police presence in that area.

KIWA was invited on a ride-along with Sheldon Police Officer Jett Korver Tuesday afternoon, and he explained the problems that are taking place.

He says failing to yield to a pedestrian at that crosswalk carries a fine of $195.

Korver says speeding vehicles in the school areas have also been a problem.

While we were out, Officer Korver stopped one vehicle that he had clocked on radar at 15 mph over the posted limit on East 6th Street, in the vicinity of the high school football field.

During the approximately 20 minutes of our ride-along, Officer Korver, along with the other Sheldon officer on duty, made a total of four stops for speeding in the area of the Sheldon schools.

Korver says the four traffic stops mark a fairly normal after-school period.

Officer Korver says his department has been increasing the patrols in the problem areas, so expect to see those black and white cars in the vicinity.

For the record, on the one citation Korver issued during Tuesday afternoon’s ride-along, he dropped the ticket from 15 mph over the limit to 10 mph over, saving the driver about $50 in fine money in the process.

Here are a few photos from Tuesday’s ride-along.
