Small Plane With Engine Trouble Lands At Sibley Airport

Sibley, Iowa — There were some tense moments today in Sibley when an airplane was reported to be enroute to the Sibley Airport with engine trouble.

According to Osceola County Sheriff’s Deputy Lee Vellema, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office was advised by personnel at the Minneapolis airport about 3:15 p.m. on Monday, November 4th, that there was a plane coming in with engine trouble. The Osceola County Ambulance, Sibley squad, the Sibley Fire Department and the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. By the time they got there, the plane had already landed, without incident.

Vellema says the pilot and his wife were the only people on board the small, single-engine recreational aircraft. He says he was advised they had left from Minneapolis.

According to Vellema, they were getting the plane towed to a hangar on the Sibley airfield, and arrangements were being made as to repairs or the next steps to take.

Vellema says they were thankful there were no injuries or damage, but he says it was a good training exercise if nothing else. He says, “It’s not something we encounter every day. It makes you think.”
