Spring Means SMVs and Motorcycles On The Road

Sheldon, Iowa — During his regular monthly appearance on the KIWA Morning Show with Wayne & Aaron Thursday morning, Iowa State Patrol Trooper Vince Kurtz talked about spring traffic hazards.  Specifically, farm implements on the road during planting season, and motorcycle safety.

Kurtz reminded farmers of the markings their implements require before going out onto the road.

He also had a reminder for motorists during this planting season.

Springtime is also when we see motorcyclists take advantage of the nice weather to get their “knees in the breeze”, and ride their bikes.  May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, and Trooper Kurtz says motorcyclists need to be the most defensive drivers on the road.

He also reminded motorists to be extra alert, and aware of the presence of motorcycles in their vicinity.

Kurtz says that, in addition to left turns in front of motorcycles, the biggest cause of motorcycle-related crashes is drivers pulling into an intersection into the path of a bike.

Trooper Vince Kurtz answers your questions the first Thursday of every month at 7:00 am on the KIWA Morning Show with Wayne & Aaron.
