Des Moines, Iowa — The man who police believe is the individual responsible for the ambush shooting deaths of two metro Des Moines area police officers early Wednesday is no stranger to Urbandale Police, according to Urbandale Police Chief Ross McCarty.

McCarty says his officers have had several previous encounters with 46-year old Scott Michael Greene, but says there was no indication that Greene might resort to such violence.  Greene is accused of first gunning down Urbandale Officer Justin Martin, who was shot in his patrol vehicle around 1:00 am Wednesday.

Moments later, about two miles away, Greene allegedly shot and killed Des Moines Police Sergeant Anthony Beminio, who was also in a patrol car. Investigators have said there was likely nothing the officers could have done to prevent the attacks. Greene was taken into custody at around 9 a.m. in rural Dallas County, where he flagged down a state DNR worker and asked him to call 911. McCarty said Greene appeared in court Tuesday afternoon, but it’s not clear if THAT played a role in the shootings.

Prior to Greene’s arrest, Urbandale Schools canceled classes for the day on McCarty’s suggestion. McCarty said Greene made “indirect” threats to the school district.

In mid-October, Greene posted a video to YouTube which documents his removal from an Urbandale High School football game. McCarty said, as of Wednesday morning, he had not seen the video but he was familiar with the incident.

Greene began recording the video outside the stadium after police officers escorted him out.

Police have said they believe Greene is the sole suspect in the murders of the two officers.

The video posted by Scott Greene in mid-October details an incident at a high school football game. In the video, Greene says he was waving a Confederate flag at the game when he was “mugged” and the flag was taken away. Greene began recording the video outside the Urbandale High stadium after police officers escorted him out.

The video from October 14th is entitled: “Police Abuse, Civil Rights Violation at Urbandale High.” In the comment section, the poster typed: “This is an assault on a person exercising his constitution rights on free speech!” Greene is heard conversing with two police officers outside of the stadium.

In the ten-minute video, Greene later had this exchange with a female officer. Greene said he wanted to file an assault report.

Greene was given the flag but refused to leave the area and an officer is heard addressing him, by name. Officers threatened to charge Greene with trespassing if he wouldn’t leave but Greene maintained he wanted assault charges filed against someone in the crowd and insisted he wasn’t causing a disturbance.

The first of this morning’s two shootings took place at the very corner where the video was shot, outside the stadium. Police say the suspect in the “ambush-style” attacks is 47-year-old Scott Michael Greene of Urbandale. Greene was last known to be driving a blue 2011 Ford F-150 with Iowa license plate 780 YFR. The truck has a silver colored topper with a ladder rack.
