Two New Councilmen To Be Sworn In At Wednesday Meeting

Sheldon, Iowa — Since two Sheldon City Council members did not choose to run for re-election, there will be two new faces on the scene when the Council holds their first meeting of the New Year this Wednesday, January 3rd.   Tom Eggers will be in the at-large seat formerly held by Zach Sawyer, and the second ward position formerly held by Randy Fonkert will be filled by Shawn Broesder.

The meeting’s agenda includes a public hearing to consider a budget amendment, and another public hearing for an amendment to the zoning ordinance, which will clarifiy the description of single-family residential dwelling units with the stipulation that these units ‘shall provide for a minimum of eight hundred square feet of floor space.’

The Council will also hear a request from the library board regarding funding of the proposed Library Renovation Project.  That project is expected to cost $220-thousand.  The Library Board is requesting approval to spend up to $70-thousand of the Library’s savings fund on the project. According to the Board, approximately $80-thousand has been earmarked for the Library, a result of under-spending their regular budget over the last three to five years.  The Board also feels that it is imperative that the City confirms if they will or will not be making an additional contribution not affiliated with the Library’s savings.  The proposed plan calls for a complete renovation of the Library with a new Storytime Room, new dedicated teen area, new work and study areas, an expanded children’s area, a renovated program room, updated adult areas, an improved meeting room, increased security, improved visibility, new flooring, and fresh paint in warm, neutral colors.

In other action, the Council will consider a resolution ordering construction of the Wastewater Treatment Facility, and fix a date for a Public Hearing and the taking of bids.  They will also consider a resolution authorizing a grant payment to the Sheldon Chamber and Development Corporation.

Wednesday’s meeting will begin at 4:30 in the upper level of the Sheldon Community Services Center.
