Statewide, Iowa — Monday evening it was revealed that the draft of the U.S. Supreme Court decision regarding an abortion case before the nation’s high court had been leaked.
The document was a draft of the Supreme Court’s majority decision, which would indicate that the high court intends to reverse Roe v Wade, the 1970’s Supreme Court decision that declared abortion a constitutional right.
Sheldon native Bob Vander Plaats is President and CEO of the FAMiLY Leader, a Christian organization whose mission is to strengthen families. He says a team from The FAMiLY Leader attended oral arguments in the case before the Supreme Court.
Vander Plaats says that the leaked draft would indicate not only a gut punch to Roe v Wade, but a complete reversal by the high court.
He says the newly leaked draft ruling leaves him hopeful and optimistic, but he says the work isn’t done.
On Tuesday morning, U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Roberts confirmed the leaked ruling is authentic, though it is only a draft and may not reflect the court’s final decision.
In 2018 the Iowa Supreme Court ruled that abortion was a “fundamental right” in the state. Vander Plaats says a Protect Life Amendment to the Iowa Constitution is the best path forward to protecting the unborn in the state should Roe v Wade be overturned..
