Will It Be Rain Or Snow This Weekend? Flip A Coin

Northwest Iowa — There’s an old saying that goes, “This is Iowa. If you don’t like the  weather, wait a few minutes and it’ll change.” That has proven to be true in the past  few weeks, with temperatures varying from double-digits below zero for most of February to days when we approached 70-degrees earlier this month.

Sometimes it seems like Mother Nature just can’t make up her mind and she may have  another surprise in store for us this weekend.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Samantha Garrett says there is some precipitation in the forecast, due to a large low pressure system.

(As above) “We’ve got a big low pressure system that’s going to work through the region starting Saturday and continuing through much of the weekend. It’s a pretty large low pressure and it’s going to be moving fairly slow across more of the south-central plains. So we’re going to be on the northern edge of it through the early part of the week, which kind of brings in a mixed bag of uncertainty and weather.”

She says there is the potential of measurable snowfall with this system.

(As above) “With this system there’s still quite a bit of uncertainty where, when and how much snow is going to fall, because at this time there’s a lot of uncertainty with where the colder air is going to move in. So, for you guys down in Sheldon, you guys might see more rain, starting…we’re going to see that starting Saturday evening, Saturday night…and rain continuing through the day on Sunday. So if you have any plans to do anything outdoors through the weekend, you’ll definitely want to do that earlier in the day on Saturday.”

Garrett says once the weekend precipitation ends, the remainder of the week should be fairly pleasant with highs in the 40’s and lows in the 20’s.
