Dating to approximately 55.8 million years ago during the early Ecocene epoch, the fossilized remains belong to Teilhardina brandti, and extinct, lemur-like primate that measured just six inches long and navigated tree canopies.
Unlike earlier primate relatives, which still relied on sharp claws, Teihardina brandti possessed flattened nails. This transition from claws to flat nails represents a huge evolutionary milestone, giving early primates the tactile precision and firm grip needed to navigate small branches and forage in ancient rainforests.
