Iowa (RI) — With Election Day underway, thousands of campaign staff members and volunteers are focused on turning supporters into voters.

Jimmy Centers, who has worked on several Republican campaigns in Iowa, says Election Day can be both exciting and stressful for those who have spent months working toward the finish line.

Campaign workers spend much of the day contacting identified supporters and making sure they actually make it to the polls.

Jeff Link, a longtime Democratic campaign strategist in Iowa, says personal contact with prospective voters is important.

Link says he saw the impact of turnout operations firsthand while serving as state director for Al Gore’s 2000 presidential campaign in Iowa.

Link predicts there will be several close races and possibly recounts after this year’s election.

Neither Link nor Centers is working for a campaign this year.
