Johnston, Iowa (RI) — The two candidates running in Iowa’s 4th Congressional District seat both voiced opposition to President Trump’s decision to import diesel fuel from Russia during a debate Wednesday night on Iowa PBS.
Republican candidate Chris McGowan said there is an awful lot of pain at the pump.
Democrat Dave Dawson says the agreement conflicts with a 2022 law prohibiting imports of Russian energy products.
The candidates discussed a variety of issues during the debate, including foreign policy.
McGowan said the war in Iran has dragged on too long, and hopefully a successful end comes soon.
Dawson says the war has destabilized fuel markets and put American lives at risk.
The candidates also agreed that federal guidelines are needed for artificial intelligence and both criticized FEMA’s response to flooding that affected northwest Iowa two years ago.
McGowan says it’s time for a bipartisan effort to reform FEMA.
Dawson says FEMA needs broader reforms to ensure aid reaches communities more quickly.
Dawson serves as an assistant county attorney for Woodbury County. McGowan has worked with the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce for over two decades and has served as its president for the past 15 years.
