Onawa, Iowa (RI) — The developer behind a proposed western Iowa site for storing a hog-manure byproduct is ending the project.
A representative of Hawthorn Land Holdings made the announcement during Tuesday’s Monona County Board of Supervisors meeting. Residents near Castana expressed concerns about potential odors and environmental impacts from the planned six-acre site.
The company had planned to use the manure byproduct as fertilizer. According to the representative, Hawthorn hired engineers and agronomists to ensure the project met or exceeded environmental standards, but acknowledged the company made a mistake by failing to notify nearby landowners about its plans.
