Iowa (RI) — Iowa motorists are being reminded that passing a stopped school bus is not only dangerous, but costly.

Iowa State Patrol Trooper Paul Gardner says passing a big yellow bus puts children’s lives at risk, and motorists need to be aware of two types of flashing lights.

A first offense for illegally passing a stopped school bus carries fines ranging from $250 to $675, up to 30 days in jail, and a 30-day driver’s license suspension. Repeat offenders face fines starting at $1,875, up to one year in jail, and a 90-day license suspension.

Gardner says all Iowa school buses need to undergo safety inspections twice each year.

The reminder comes during National School Bus Safety Week. This year’s theme is “Safe Rides, Everyday Heroes.”
