Rock Rapids, Iowa — A former West Lyon softball coach accused of sexually exploiting a student has been sentenced.

According to court documents, Alexis Severson of Larchwood entered a not guilty plea last December on three counts of sexual exploitation by a school employee and one count of grooming, all Class D felonies.

Severson, who previously served as head softball coach at West Lyon, was accused of engaging in a long-term sexual relationship with a student. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office arrested her on Friday, Oct. 31, 2025, after an investigation.

Of the four felony counts, one was changed to an aggravated misdemeanor, and two were dismissed (one count of sexual exploitation and one of grooming), leaving one felony and one misdemeanor charge.

On the felony, she was granted a deferred judgment, which means if she serves her probation without an issue, the charge can be expunged from her record without being sentenced. She was ordered to pay a $1,025 civil penalty and placed on probation under the custody of the Iowa Department of Corrections for a term not to exceed 5 years.

On the remaining misdemeanor charge, Severson was sentenced to an indeterminate term of incarceration not to exceed two years, which was all suspended, and she was ordered to pay an $855 fine plus applicable surcharges.
