Iowa (RI) — Sen. Chuck Grassley says he would be willing to sign a pledge supporting acceptance of next week’s election results, though he does not believe such a pledge is necessary.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers is circulating a written pledge that would commit members of Congress to accepting the results of the midterm elections and allowing winning candidates to take office in January regardless of party affiliation.

According to reports, the proposed letter opposes efforts to undermine free and fair elections or delay the seating of duly elected members of Congress.

Grassley says he would be willing to sign the pledge, but noted that existing constitutional safeguards already address disputes about elected officials taking office.

The effort is being led by Republican Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska and Democratic Rep. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey. Gottheimer told the Wall Street Journal the pledge is worth taking the extra measure, noting the violence that occurred at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

The midterm election will be held Nov. 3rd.
