Statewide Iowa (RI) — The last large group of Iowa National Guard soldiers deployed to the Middle East as part of a 1,800-member mission will soon return home.
Adjutant General Stephen Osborn is the leader of the Iowa Guard.
Welcome-home ceremonies are being planned and will be announced soon.
Osborn says that while most of the members of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division will be back home, some soldiers will remain on active duty.
Osborn says they will send 80 soldiers to Eastern Europe in July to support efforts responding to Russian aggression.
The Iowa National Guard kicked off its summer series of concerts and events Thursday at Camp Dodge in Johnston.
Osborn says the event was a kickoff of Iowa’s America 250 events, featuring speeches, recognition of service members, a performance by the 34th Army Scrap Metal Band, and music from a local band. The event is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Camp Dodge.
