(KIWA Staff Photo)Iowa (RI) — Several Iowa communities are remembering the September 11th attacks 25 years ago by planting thousands of small American flags in public spaces.
In Oskaloosa, high school students placed about 3,000 flags across the town square. In Des Moines, thousands of flags line the pedestrian trail at Gray’s Lake Park along busy Fleur Drive. At Dordt University in Sioux Center, volunteers installed 2,977 flags outside the campus center Thursday night — one for each person killed in the attacks.
Van Beek wasn’t born when the attacks occurred, but he says learning about the unity that followed has shaped how he remembers the day.
A short service is planned at 9 a.m. at the Oskaloosa town square, including recognition of local first responders, a bell ceremony, and the playing of “American Grace” on the bagpipes.
