Several Factors Have Deer on the Move, Leading to More Accidents

Iowa (RI) — There have been several deer-related crashes across Iowa in recent days, and wildlife officials say a combination of harvest activity, breeding season, and changing weather is increasing deer movement.

Iowa DNR state deer biologist Jace Elliot says ongoing harvest activity is one of the biggest factors.

Elliot says deer are also becoming more active as breeding season approaches.

He says weather can also play a role in deer activity.

Elliot says drivers should be especially cautious during dawn and dusk, when deer are most active.

He recommends drivers to know where they are more likely to encounter a deer crossing the road.

A motorcycle collision with a deer in Clayton County over the weekend left one person dead and two seriously injured. Two separate motorcycle-deer crashes in Black Hawk County also resulted in injuries.
