Sheldon City Council Approves Emergency Alcohol License, Prepares For Wednesday Meeting

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon City Council met in special session on Tuesday morning, May 5th, with one item on the agenda. Mayor Pro Tem Pete Hamil called the meeting to order.

It was explained in the meeting’s paperwork that IMT insurance was supposed to have endorsed the alcohol license of La Pasada Mexican restaurant before the license renewal on May 3rd, but failed to do so, so the license was canceled, just two days before Cinco De Mayo, a celebration of Mexican Heritage. So, the business’s insurance agent helped them apply for a new license, hoping to have it in place by Cinco De Mayo.

The potential license was presented to the council on Tuesday morning, and they approved the measure on a unanimous vote in probably one of the shortest meetings in known history. The meeting was one minute and 18 seconds long.

Meanwhile, the Sheldon City Council will meet in regular session at 4:30 p.m. this Wednesday afternoon in the council chambers at the Sheldon Community Services Center across 9th Street from KIWA Radio.

On their consent agenda are the meeting minutes from the previous meeting, the list of claims, a temporary closure of West 7th Street to facilitate rail crossing repairs near AGP, the resignation of Police Offier Zane Roberts (who has joined the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office), a pay application for the Western Avenue project, a liquor license renewal for Cobblestone Inn & Suites, an ownership change as it applies to Dollar General’s alcohol license, the approval of a community walk put on by the Surviving Forward Foundation to raise awarness about human trafficking, the consideration of the Mayor’s appointment of Diann Merley to the Library Board of Trustees, the hiring of full-time paramedic Amy Shields, a resolution supporting the Sheldon Airport Commission’s AIP grant application, and the setting of a public hearing date (likely to be May 20th) for budget amendment for fiscal year 2025-26. Unless a council member requests that an item be pulled out of the consent agenda to vote on separately, the entire consent agenda will be voted on in a single motion.

In old business, the council will have a public comment period for the recycling and garbage resolutions and consider a contract amendment and a rate increase.

In new business, the council will award contracts on the West Highway 18 and D Street and the Wyman and 16th culvert replacement projects, consider a resolution accepting easements for the 18 and D street project, and consider a TIF incentive for a Beck Engineering building.

At the end of the regular meeting, the council may go into closed session for the annual City Manager evaluation.

The meeting starts at 4:30 p.m. in the council chambers and is available on YouTube.
