Sioux City, Iowa (KUOO) — A Sioux City man will spend six years behind bars after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm by a felon and drug user. 28-year-old Yoni Duenas was sentenced Thursday in federal court in Sioux City.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa says a little before midnight on January 2nd of this year a deputy in Lyon County pulled over a vehicle driven by Duenas for an equipment violation and discovered he was impaired to the point of even losing consciousness during field sobriety tests.
Authorities also discovered a strong smell of marijuana in the vehicle along with a female, a four-year-old child and a one-year-old child along with marijuana, methamphetamine and a loaded handgun.
They also discovered Duenas had previous criminal history of drug and firearms charges and had been sent back to prison three previous times after violating terms of supervised release. Prosecutors say just 38 days after completing one federal sentence, Duenas had rearmed and was arrested in the Lyon County case.
He’s being held in federal custody pending transport to a prison.
